Valproate acid, Drugs for Epilepsy Seizures

Valproic acid is used alone or together with other medicines to control seizures in epilepsy treatment. These drugs work in brain tissue to stop the seizures.

Valproic acid is also used to treat the manic phase of bipolar disorder (manic-depressive) and help prevent migraine headaches.

dose

1. For seizures:
- Adults and children aged 10 years or older: Dose is based on body weight and must be determined by your doctor. At first, the usual dose is 10 to 15 mg per kg of body weight.

Your doctor may increase your dose gradually every week by 5 to 10 mg per kg body weight if needed. However, the dose usually is not more than 60 mg per kg of body weight a day. If the total daily dose greater than 250 mg, usually divided into smaller doses and taken twice or more during the day.

- Children under 10 years: Use and dose must be determined by your doctor.

2. For mania:
- Adults: Initially, 750 mg once daily, usually divided into smaller doses. Your doctor may increase your dose as needed.
- Children: Dose and usage should be determined by your doctor.

3. For migraine:
- Adults: Initially, 250 mg twice daily. Your doctor may increase your dose as needed. However, the dose usually is not more than 1000 mg a day.
- Children: Dose and usage should be determined by your doctor.

side effects

     Acid or sour stomach
     belch
     Body aches or pain
     ear buzzing
     Hair loss or thinning hair
     hearing loss
     heartburn
     Impaired vision
     Problems with memory
     rash
     Swollen glands in the neck
     Hard to swallow food
     Can not sleep
     Uncontrolled eye movements
     inflexion
     Weight gain or decreasing
